Discovering Highlands, North Carolina

Tucked up in the mountains at 4,118 ft, Highlands, North Carolina is bit of a surprise for most people expecting to find a sleepy mountain town.  Sure, it’s surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, and hiking trails, but it’s more of an upscale spa town.  It’s a popular place for Atlanta’s upper crust to have their second homes and for Floridians to escape the heat during the summers.   And while mixing with the yacht club crowd is not everyone’s cup of tea, it does have it’s benefits and that includes the first class hotels, dining, and other activities when you want to be less grungy.

There are plenty of upscale hotels and B&Bs including the Old Edwards Inn and Spa, but if you’re going to spend more than two nights, I’d recommend getting a house or cabin in town to capture the full Highlands experience.  For me, that’s a fireplace or a balcony with a mountain view.

 

 

Beer

Satulah Mountain Brewing Co is the only brewery operating in Highlands proper.  Opened in 2014, they have offer a few of their own beers as well as other beers from around the state and the rest of the country.

Dining

Shopping – I don’t shop, but I know there are plenty of stores because I see the ladies walking around with shopping bags and old men sleeping on benches in front of stores.  You’ll have to do your own research on that one.  This is a beer blog after all.
