Hong Kong Trip Report – Hong Kong Island- Days 1 to 3

Trip Background
October 21, 2018 to October 29, 2018

This was a 7 night trip for just my wife and myself.  My wife had to go to China for 3 nights for work but needed to fly into Hong Kong first.  So, I came with her.  This was my first trip to Asia so I decided to stay in Hong Kong rather than go into China and she joined me for the last three days.

Day 1

We arrived in Hong Kong at 6:30pm and took the airport express into Hong Kong city.  For the first three nights, I stayed at the Butterfly on Wellington on Hong Kong Island.  It wasn’t fancy, but it was cheap, clean, and had a perfect location.   The hotel is right by the central-mid level escalators which is a convenient way to walk up, down, and around the city.

We were hungry so we went looking for food.  I want to to hit Little Bao for dinner which wasn’t too far away.

The food was solid but I wasn’t blown away.  But, I did love my Pilsner from Young Master Brewing.

Day 2

I walked my wife back down the escalators (they move downhill from 6am to 10am and uphill the rest of the day) and it was an easy 5 minutes to Central Station.  She took the express chain into China, and I had Hong Kong to myself.   But it was only 8am and Hong Kong was pretty sleepy.  I walked around the IFC Mall to find the rooftop but nothing was even open to get a coffee.  I walked down to the pier, grabbed a coffee and a muffin and watched the ferries come in.

After breakfast, I walked back up towards Lan Kwai Fong (the famous nightclub district) just to see it.  In the daylight, it reminded me of New Orleans.  Really smelly and gross.  I’m sure at night, after a few drinks, it’s less smelly.

I took an hour to relax in the hotel, but I get itchy fee, so I couldn’t relax more than an hour.  I went back down to the IFC mall to grab that coffee on the rooftop.  Then I took the metro to Causeway Bay.  It was still early so didn’t eat at food street.  Walked through Victoria Park.  Then to the buddhist temple and then second draft.  Took subway back to central for another break at the hotel.

Walked up to the Globe, then Kau Kee.  Crazy.  Only westerner in line or in the restaurant.  Sat another table with the Noodle Nazi.  Flying roaches.  Beef brisket soup.  Then to 65 Peel.  Then Roundhouse to round out the night.
